Image of Lawsons Estate on Macquarie Farm

Lawsons Estate on Macquarie Farm

In 1813, explorers Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth, and William Lawson became the first Europeans to cross the Blue Mountains. In recognition of this pivotal achievement, Governor Lachlan Macquarie awarded each a land grant. William Lawson was granted 1,000 acres at the confluence of the Campbell and Fish Rivers — a place of fertile plains and rich promise.

Established in 1815, Lawsons Estate is believed to be the first European farm in the Central West, anchoring the early colonial presence in inland New South Wales. The estate’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and remarkable continuity, having remained in the hands of just four families over two centuries.

At its heart stands the original Homestead and Convict Barracks, built between 1820 and 1824. These buildings reflect the architectural restraint and functional beauty of the colonial frontier. Thick stone walls, convict-made bricks, low arched cellars, and handmade cedar features offer a tangible link to the past — from the spiral staircase to the visible ship beam in the servants' quarters.
